I am designing a program to work with women who are dealing with addiction and recovery (in Mobile, Ala.). I have always heard (and said to my students) that belly dance builds confidence, enhances self-esteem, is therapeutic, etc.

BUT does anyone know for sure if any studies have been done to support this assertion? I would like to know as it would be helpful for me to be able to present this information to the people who are in charge of the programs in which I will work.

Thank you,
ZD

  • I know one dancer here did do research on the effects it has but I think she is still working on it. She interviewed many of us.

I use to live in Birmingham and volunteered for the United Way Rape Response Group there (Rape Response Counselor - was at the hospital with the survivor). Contact them and see if they have some info. They are WONDERFUL!!! And had a lot of various info. So look up the united way and ask for the head individual of rape response group --- it has been over 10 years so I know it is not the same person now probably. They may be able to help too.

Good luck -- what a wonderful program!!! I do an informal focus like that in my class (like I imagine many of us do). I work with each ladies energy and confidence. On an informal level -- it is there and it does work but I do not have any formal research to back it up. I just became a nurse and plan to incorporate the focus of health and wellness with bellydance in the future.....still exploring formal avenues. Right now...just known for the support and confidence building within the community. Keep it up and please please keep me posted as that is wonderful!!!
