I've got a student who has torn a deep abdominal muscle and it's causing her consistent pain when she belly dances. Near as she and her doctor can figure she injured herself at a workshop about 8 mos ago and keeps re-injuring the muscle. Has anyone heard of or had a student tear a deep abdominal muscle due to belly dance?
If so, any suggestions besides rest? She's not sure what particular move caused the problem, so I'm not sure what to avoid once she does return to class.

Re: Student with Injury Question
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 7:45 AMI've never heard of tearing an ab muscle through bellydance - but, there's a first for everything I suppose. After two abdominal surgeries I can tell you that resting the muscle is the best thing for healing. However, she should still exercise through walking and maybe once a week try a very light bellydance move to begin the abdominal conditioning. I know muscle tears are not the same as surgical cuts, but it's the best advice I can give. :) good luck! -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Tue, March 24, 2009 - 5:10 PMOK, I'm not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV), but a TEAR sounds like something that one would REMEMBER at the moment it happens. Is she sure it's an actual tear? Did she have some sort of imaging done (ultrasound? MRI?, etc.)?
It just doesn't sound right to me. It's one thing if the issue was a torn knee ligament, ankle sprain, etc. from a spin... that makes sense. But an AB muscle??? It's almost like tearing a glute! She must have put some sort of extraordinary strain on it. Was she bellydancing upside down wearing gravity boots?
Something about this just doesn't make sense to me. -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 5:23 AMIt's confusing to me as well - but far be it for me to tell her she doesn't know what her body is telling her - nor to contradict her professional medical opinion. Whether it's an actual tear or a strain I would imagine that the "prescription" her doctor gave her would be similar.
I'm more concerned with how to assist her in her dance when she returns to class. I don't want to aggravate things or push her too quickly and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I've been dancing since 1990 and I've never heard of such a thing - but then again I'm a big believer in Murphy's Law - if it can happen, it will happen!

Re: Student with Injury Question
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 1:13 AMHmmm, I agree with everyone that it's strange she doesn't remember when she inured herself.
I had a sore abdominal muscle once, and I know exactly how I got it :-) It wasn't from bellydancing, but I had a cold and just got it from all the coughing!
I just kept on bellydancing, but certain moves would hurt.... I could do a chest lift, but not a chest slide and could only do small hipcircles and hip slides... Normally her body should tell her which movements she should avoid!
To answer your question, I would be extra careful with all chest isolations... -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 5:53 AMwow, that's too bad. If it's causing her "consistent pain when she belly dances" then I'd think she shouldn't be belly dancing, unfortunately. It must not have healed all the way - if I were you I'd make sure her dr. ok's her return to class before taking her again. -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 3:58 AMDefinitely. She's very gung ho and I knew she was having some discomfort and had advised her to take it easy and to see a doctor. She finally did.

Re: Student with Injury Question
Thu, March 26, 2009 - 12:46 PMDo you know who the workshop was with? What the subject of the workshop was? Was it something likely to cause injury? A teacher with a less than stellar track record or a record for really being tough? Did they use warm-ups that seemed unusual to her? Did they do backbends or choreos that might have required strong abdominal muscles to be properly done?
Perhaps this sort of information could clue you in on how she got hurt. -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 4:58 AMI do know who the workshop was with - several of my students attended and all enjoyed it very much. It wasn't bad teaching or poor warm-ups. She pushed herself too hard too fast. She knows this and is now taking care of herself. We've talked over what was done in the workshop and nothing jumped out at me as being something that could have caused such an injury. The other students were sore in totally different places and that was it.
Different people have different weaknesses and sometimes they catch us by surprise. I think this is one of those.
Thanks for the input!

Re: Student with Injury Question
Tue, March 31, 2009 - 2:24 PMI once tore my right oblique, and because I was stubborn and kept dancing when I wasn't fully healed, it still gives me trouble. She can do very, very light dancing, but not much.
Rest is the key. She needs to take it easy for at least a month if the tear is severe.
Usually the only reason for tearing a muscle is improper warm up. I pulled my oblique because I skipped through my warm up and then danced. She needs to take extra caution to make sure that she is feeling very strong and limber before she starts dancing. She may need to take extra time to warm up now, and will need to do stretches specifically for the area she tore, concentrating heavily on the injured area. -

Re: Student with Injury Question
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 3:48 AMThanks for your thoughts. I'll make sure to pass on the warm-up and stretch information. She takes a long time to loosen up and often will start dancing and then have to stop and do some more stretching or slow movement to get fully warm. It's quiet possible that she didn't warm up enough. I've told her to monitor this, I'm sure this will give her extra incentive!
Thanks,
Halleyah :)
