I've had an onslaught of people wanting to take classes with me privately. Normally, this would not have been a problem, but I just moved to a new venue and the only time I have access to the studio space is during my group classes (which are very small they are practically semi-private as it is). I understand the 'why' of their desire, I just need some options on figuring out how to handle the situation - I'm not exactly comfortable having folks at my home, since I don't really have an adequate space (and it's not an allergy friendly environment) and I'm not entirely sure I want to start making house-calls again either. I also have no idea what to charge.

Re: Private classes *help!*
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 4:35 AM$40-$60 seems to be the going rate around here, tho there is one gal who charges less- for me, between babysitters & gas money, it takes me $30 to get out of the house!
as far as space- can you lengthen your studio time for group classes to make a half hour available before or after class for privates? that way you don't have to carve too much extra time out of your schedule, if there is room in the studio schedule for that.
& studio hopping is almost as bad as house calls in my opinion. A necessary evil for me right now, but I'm not happy about it. Are there any other studios with available space in the area? I've known realtors & other business owners willing to sublet space during off hours for violin & dance lessons to help cover the rent in the current economy as well. (I wish my neighbor's "off hours" corresponded with mine tho- our office walls are too thin & that violin is annoying at 10 in the morning!) -

Re: Private classes *help!*
Wed, April 29, 2009 - 6:51 AMDear Jenn,
I have noticed an upswing in private classes, too, though the economy seems to have affected attendance in my regular weekly classes and it is somewhat down. I agree with Lara that you might have to look elsewhere to find a space for private classes. I am fortunate in that the studio where I teach is usually empty at certain times of day, usually around dinner time, so I can teach there, but I have on occasion gone to other studios looking for space. Sometimes gyms will rent space at a good rate, too. And everyone is looking for a way to make the rent payment right now, as Lara said, so sometimes you can negotiate a price, too.
I am not sure where you are located, but the going rate in my neck of the woods is $40-50 and hour. (Eastern Washington is an economically repressed area.) I have not raised my private rates for some time because I feel that I can afford to give my fellow dancers a break right now, as we ALL need it!!
Regards,
A'isha

Sun, May 17, 2009 - 6:09 AMhey Jennifer! I'm in Ohio too and most in our area go abt $30/hour. Maybe more if you make house calls, but i find most folks can't afford more on any kind of regular basis :/ sorry i can't help w/ the space issue but wish you best of luck!
