Hello Ladies,
It's seems that some of my irregular students are somewhat upset about not knowing about upcoming events. We usually talk about it in class and most events are posted on my website. But some people seem not to get the info. Do you call each student individually to let them know about events ? Any advice ??
Thanks and Happy Dancing !!

Re: Do you call each dancer individually to remind them of events ?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 8:47 PMCall each student? Um, no. If they can't either come to class or check online, that's on them. If they're upset about it, perhaps they need to learn about taking some personal responsibility.
I think that if you make class announcements and put it online where they know where to find it, you've done your job. I would ignore those students that expect special treatment. -

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 9:15 PMWhat Gibson said. It's great that you want them to be informed, but you're not their Mom! You make the info available, and it is up to them to avail themselves of it.

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 9:27 PMUgs - This is the result of Helicopter Mothers.
A generation of people who want everything served to them - will have no clue how to figure anything out. -- Includes being responsible for self.
If they want to know, they have to show up when the information is given. Dont know when that will be? Then show up to every class and learn!
Or at least check where you tend to post things... sheesh! -

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 3:36 AMI agree. If they want info, they have to use the same info that is provided to the rest of the class or find it themselves. I don't spoon feed anybody.

Re: Do you call each dancer individually to remind them of events ?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 4:22 AMDepending on the time of year, I could have 100 students! There's no way I could call them all... That's what my website is for- giving them information.
I always remind them of events in class, and I always remind them of the website address (and the password, for the bits that are more specific to them, like choreo notes & handouts, which are in a password protected section of the site).

Re: Do you call each dancer individually to remind them of events ?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 8:12 AMYou're doing fine & they need to get with the program. How self-centered people are sometimes! I was actually accused of keeping secrets because someone who didnt' come to class missed hearing about stuff that we talked about - in class. Never mind that it was also posted on my webpage! sheesh

Re: Do you call each dancer individually to remind them of events ?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:19 AMI've got the e-mail adresses of my studients organiced by class schedule. So I send them an e-mail for the things I want them to know, like coreography tips or costume advice.
I also talk all of this things in class, but I use e-mail as reminder -

Re: Do you call each dancer individually to remind them of events ?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 9:24 AMI use an email system as well, things are always mentioned in class, but I have students who take a session or two off and like to know when the next session is starting. The email reminder that a new session starts next week for example generally helps bring one or two of the ones who took a session off, back in to class.
