Hi everyone,
I have an interview with a very respectable dance community in my area, after I received a job description through my email. They were looking for a dance teacher for pregnant women, they wanted to look for a fun class that is suitable for women in any part of their pregnancy, so I thought belly dance would be perfect for this, as most classes like this in my area are yoga classes.
I have an interview with them next month, and wanted to spend the time before that to get as much info as possible. I know there are some video's out, but first of all I wanted to check here as well, to see if any of you have already started a class just for pregnant women? Is there anything in particular I should be careful about, such as insurance, injuries, ... I want to be really well informed on this aspect. I have never been pregnant before and have no idea (except for common sense) which movements are really good and which are really bad for them. I am pretty sure any belly dance movements are fine: such as undulations, hip circles, hip locks (but no sharp locks or shimmies), figure eights,... however I am not so sure on traveling steps (maybe it is damaging to be on the toes for too long? or spinning may take them off balance or dizzy?) but I am not so sure on strengthening exercises and stretches. I read on the shira website that in a certain part of the pregnancy you have to be careful with certain stretches as it can damage you for life.
Do you think it is a good idea to have them sign a claim to cover my insurance?
Which other tips do you all have regarding this?
thank you!

Fri, December 19, 2008 - 12:11 PMha sorry I found that there is a thread just like this one on tribe already from like a month ago...
But I still would like to know if people knew how best to be covered for insurance if something were to happen? I am thinking that maybe one of the women could get a miscarriage which might have nothing to do with my class, but that she might think it did? I am just really worried about that part. -

Re: belly dance for pregnant women
Fri, December 19, 2008 - 4:56 PMBesides having studio insurance, I do have folks fill out a medical screening form from their health care provider and a release of liability form- but you might actually check with a lawyer since asking for medical history that can actually set you up for MORE lawsuits depending on state laws, because it then implies that you are claiming medical knowledge. Mine state very clearly that continued consultation with a health care professional is required for participation and that the participant is ultimately responsible for their own health & participation in any activity during class is optional.
What a world. Good luck!
