I'm trying to convince myself it's not funny, but there's no use. I'm laughing. You can too.
There is a problem. It is someone's feet. When the shoes come off for warm-ups...wow it's bad. They don't wear socks with their shoes either, and the shoes smell too! It is very much noticed by anyone in the room.
How exactly would you handle this? I'm thinking maybe getting a foot spray and setting it out for everyone?
...I have a feeling this thread is going to be serious *and* silly.

Re: This isn't funny (OK yes it is)
Tue, March 3, 2009 - 8:13 PMYep, bare feet in shoes will always have that effect. Putting out the spray is a good idea, but maybe be sure to offer it to her first and ask her to pass it around.
They do actually make inserts you can put in your shoes when you take them off to absorb odors, makes a nice gift, LOL.
Good luck!

Re: This isn't funny (OK yes it is)
Tue, March 3, 2009 - 11:15 PMSeriously, though, that odor is probably fungus and you don't want it spread around. Make them spray their feet! My son went through a terrible time with a fungus that truly was the most horrible smell. I MADE him go to the foot doctor. It was enough to make you throw up! The instructions were 1. wear white socks and only white socks 2. Change them twice a day 3. alternate shoes daily and spray them as soon as you take them off for the night 3. use the cream the doc gave, morning and night. After 2 weeks of this, continue numbers 1 and 2 for the rest of your life, and spray your feet each morning with Right Guard and your shoes at night. You don't want your entire class picking up a fungus like that one! -

Wed, March 4, 2009 - 5:53 AMEWWWW! An exceptionally good argument for always dancing with some kind of cover on your feet, my preference is ballet slippers - you only get one pair of feet so you ought to take good care of them!

Re: This isn't funny (OK yes it is)
Wed, March 4, 2009 - 6:11 AMYeah, my sister's feet went to hell (figuratively speaking) with a fungus she caught in her teens, and she doesn't wear sandals now, her toenails are - uh - not real pretty...... You don't want anyone else catching that, ick -

Re: This isn't funny (OK yes it is)
Thu, March 5, 2009 - 9:40 AMmaybe keep antibacterial wipes close at hand (or foot :)
wherever they are removing their shoes, maybe you can set up a little container of anti-bac wipes and a wastebasket.
or baby wipes or something like it.
good luck!

Thu, March 5, 2009 - 10:26 AMyech! atheletes foot! my husband had it some years ago, it was awful... my feet are generally pretty sweet and don't have anything nasty lurking between the toes, but my dance shoes do get a bit toxic sometimes even so... I have actually chucked them in the washing machine a couple of times....( feeling worried now as i have to teach class in less than an hour, are they wishing I'd change my shoes more often...eeek!)

Re: This isn't funny (OK yes it is)
Thu, March 12, 2009 - 1:44 AM2 pair a day
Any athletes foot spray
and 2 things on the white socks: the colored ones aparently are better at harboring bacteria, and white socks can be BLEACHED!!!
After the bacterial infection is gone, he recommends using Right Guard on feet and shoes.
On his feet, the cream was a special cream, requiring prescription. I would have to ask Dr. what it was. -

Mon, March 16, 2009 - 11:35 AMJust curious. I had heard of treating the feet, but not the shoes. It makes sense to treat the shoes, too.
Now to drop a hint to someone I know.... -

Dance shoe funk remedy
Sat, March 21, 2009 - 9:47 PMI know it's not something that happens in my sneakers because I'm wearing socks for my exercise classes & normally my feet don't smell. No matter how dilligent you are with the hygiene of your tootsies, your dance shoes will probably have a funky "vinegary" smell after multiple wears. Your feet are sweating & chances are your not letting them dry before you stuff 'em into your bag. I found a great remedy! Get 2 pair of old socks (not to long, not too short). We all have 'em mismatched socks. Fill the first sock with baking soda, tie a knot on top & place it in the 2nd sock. Tie 2nd knot (or use a twist tie to make it easier to refill with baking soda when needed). Place these flexible pups in your dance shoes after class & you'll notice the stinkies will go away! If you only use 1 pair of socks you'll get baking soda on everything in your dance bag & it'll spill all over the floor when you take them out of your shoes. You can also pat the baking soda filled sockies on your tootsies so you can dry & deodorized your paws before you put your street shoes on. Works like a charm! Haven't been embarrassed when removing my dance shoes in months. -

Re: Dance shoe funk remedy
Sun, March 22, 2009 - 10:00 AMgreat suggestion Luz....
so as a teacher you could make up a bunch of them and put them in a basket for the students [clean out the hubby and kids old sock mismatches !]
maybe a workshop or class on costuming and storage - sneak the shoe thing in... ! -

Re: Dance shoe funk remedy
Wed, March 25, 2009 - 8:49 AMWhen I was a teenager and in my early 20s I had a problem with my feet smelling...I mean it was really really bad. Very strong. And it seemed that nothing I did helped. I used odor sprays, used deodorant on my feet...you name it, I tried it. I finally had to go and see a doctor about it when I was about 20 years old. It was so bad that it didn't matter if I had shoes on or off, what kind of shoes, what kind of socks. It was so bad that I was embarrassed to go out and taking a dance class would have mortified me at the time.
It was an insanely embarrassing problem to have...especially since I tried so hard to fix it and nothing I tried worked. But I finally did find a solution to the problem: tea. My doctor suggested that I soak my feet in black tea. It not only worked, but work really fast. I think I did the foot soaks for about a month. Almost 10 years later, my feet are still odor free. In fact, they rarely get smelly at all anymore.
If you can, try to suggest it to the student with the offending odor. It made a huge difference in my life for me! -

Re: Dance shoe funk remedy
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 7:37 AMWow, your tea remedy is the same thing my father uses for his feet. However, he does a Perioxide foot bath as well as the Black tea foot bath. The perioxide is great for the toe nails, it prevents the Black tea from staining the toe nails. My dad learned that foot trick while overseas in the Philipines during World War II. A lot the soldiers were getting foot rot, and the locals taught them that remedy to save their feet.
I used to work at a Health club, and I alway passed my dad's story on to any one who thought that might have a foot fungus. They gave the Blacktea bath and then the Periode bath a try. Words always got back to me that their foot fungus or foot odor was gone.

Tue, April 7, 2009 - 7:45 AMMy huby & I were at the Sports Authority & we saw these little deodorizers for sneakers shaped like soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, etc. He bought a pair for his work boots. I'll let you know how good they are after a few more wears.
