I was talking with a student dancer in another area today and she said all her instructors have worn their full costumes to teach. I'm just curious if this is a new trend? Are you teaching in a bedleh?

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 10:03 PMMost teachers I've seen have just taught in yoga type pants and a shimmy belt. Something comfy where you can see their body parts and movements. Full costume is nice to show what the moves look like when performing, but durring practice I'd rather them not be in full regalia. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 12:40 AMI agree with Erica. None of my teachers came to class in full regalia. When I teach I wear comfy pants and a tank top with scarfs tied around my hips. Sometimes I'll tuck my shirt up under my bra so students can see the movement more clearly. And I wear funky earrings and eyeliner to give me a bit of a look. But it is not about creating a look, it's about teaching the dance. Costumes can get in the way of clearly demonstrating the breakdown of the movements and can also distant the teacher form the student. This isn't to say that you should have fun and look good or set a mood for class. But, it's not a performance, it's a class. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 4:11 AMI'm with you Lulu--teaching is all about showing the students how a moves looks--and that is why I wear the same stuff you do. Teaching is less about the teacher and more about the students.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:38 AMI wear the yoga pants or Melodia pants, a crop top (choli or crop tank top or GeishaMoth top) and some sort of hip scarf or belt. I actually decided not to buy a certain cute pair of pants recently b/c I was going to wear it only for teaching and my students wouldn't be able to see my knees very well... I do sometimes tie my Melos at knee so that my students can see my feet and knees.
Typically, at the end of my beginners session, though, I do wear a full blown tribal outfit to show them how it would look like in full garb instead of just practice clothes. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:45 AMI agree with Erica, too. It is not possible for students to see the instructor's movements if she is dressed in full dance costume, or there are things that are so distracting that they do not necessarily feel like they can pay attention. I also discourage my students from showing up to class dressed for the stage. I usually wear a catsuit (unitard) and hip wrap of some sort, with no noise makers unless I am trying to make a certain point with noise for some reason, for example if I want to show the "sound:" of a 3/4 shimmy. I do not care if my students wear coins but I want them to pay ore attention to how something is made to happen rather than the pretty sound of the coins. I so-taught with Shakira of Ohio once in Virginia and she wore her jeans and a tightish sweater to teach in and it worked out fine on her!! I occasionally teach in stretch jeans and a tank top with hip wrap, but not very often.
Regards,
A'isha

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 11:05 AMThis is what I do, too. I wear yoga pants to teach 95% of the time, with a choli top, and a hip scarf. I teach ATS, so sometimes I do wear a skirt, but it winds up hiked up out of my way most of the class, so you can still see my legs. If we have a class discussing costumes, I bring a bunch of stuff alone so we can play dress-up, but then I'm not teaching moves so much as teaching what to wear.
I thought it was very weird, but the student seemed to think I was crazy when I said I had never, in 13 years of belly dance, had a teacher who wore full costume to teach every week. As was mentioned by everyone here, I wouldn't do it cause how could the student see what you're doing?
Just checking that I wasn't losing my mind :) Thanks all. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 11:25 AMOne possibility (it's a slim one but it's there) is that the student in question mixed up practice wear and full costume. For example, I often wear my black sash Melos with a rosehip-like skirt and then a kuchi belt over the whole thing and a Geisha Moth Incognito top. I've had students before who thought that I was wearing a full costume because of that. To me, that's practice wear. My full costume is different and more elaborate... -
-
Re: What do you wear to teach?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 4:16 AMI thought about that, I wear a choli and skirt but don't consider that costume - ATS costume is also more elaborate - but this student has never taken a tribal class, only cabaret.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 12:40 AMI wear Sugarpetals unitards and jazz pants or Melodia pants with whatever hipscarf I feel like wearing that day. On the last class of a session I might wear an L. Rose top and skirt, or a new costume that I need a trial run in before I wear it for a performance. It lets students see the "whole package" so to speak but I wouldn't wear a full costume to teach in on a regular basis. First off the wear and tear alone on costumes for weekly classes would mean repairing/replacing them way too often secondly most costumes are designed to hide the mechanics of what we are doing which is exactly what a student needs to see.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 9:19 AMFull costume? How can the students see your body? I wear yoga pants or jazz pants and a crop top, choli or tank top. Toss a scarf on the hip and that's it. I've never seen someone teach in a full costume.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 4:15 PMI teach Egyptian style dance.
I wear a pair of leggings and a snug tank top, sports bra or something I can tie under my boobs. I'll often pair it with a light & faffy skirt that I tuck up so you can see my legs from the front and sides.
For the final class of term I usually wear something I'd wear to a hafla, and encourage my students to do the same. It's fun & takes the pressure off beginners to go out and buy $300-800 worth of spangled bedlah. That sort of thing I save for performance.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 1:11 PM*laugh* I wouldn't dream of teaching class in one of my bedlehs! Think of all the things that could happen . . . eek!
During the summer, I wear fabric shorts or crop leggings with a scarf tied over and a short sleeved choli top. In the winter I wear ankle length leggings and leg warmers and a long sleeved choli top.
Things like this are comfortable, practical and stretchy, and allow my students to see my knee and pelvis placement which is EXTREMELY important.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Thu, September 24, 2009 - 3:44 PMBecause in class a lot of sweating tends to go on and since most of my fancy costumes are non washable- I try to only bring them out on special occasions.
But I think its nice to have (washable) fun workout wear for instructing. I have even painted some eastern inspired designs onto sports bras & leggings, added a simple bead fringe to the bottom of a midriff top to 'easternize' it. Some pretty sari tops & layering of fringe scarves & coin belts on the hips. Bracelets, earrings, henna tattooes, etc. adds some magic.
Afterall, some students like to dress up and if the teacher just has on a leggings & sports bra, it can discourage them from enjoying that fun exotic element that make belly dance so much more than a workout.
I have heard women say things like:
"I work hard out in the sun all day in work boots & overalls- bellydancing is the only part of my day when I get to feel like a lady"- she would come to class looking like I dream of Jeannie
"I sit at a boring office all day in stiff skirts & heels where I have to look conservative- bellydance is when I get to be myself & express my creativity"- you would have never guessed where she worked by her bellydance class gear.
So if the instructor doesn't play up the middle eastern/exotic feel in what she is wearing herself, these types of women might feel too embarassed to dress the way they'd really like to. Good teaching is good teaching no matter what you have on but I'd hate to see belly dancing get so mainstream that it loses that spice & magic. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:14 PMI teach other fitness classes back to back with my MED classes, so I usually end up just throwing on a hip scarf for MED- if I am doing just MED for the day, I've got some more 'out there' versions of yoga pants and am more likely to wear a crop top too.
I do always make sure I've got my make up done & hair nice, and I'm in 'fancy' exercise gear rather than a tank & sweats- because this really is another kind of performance in a way.
I don't mind if students want to dress up a bit, as long as I can see what is going on (no full skirts unless we are doing skirt dance!) but generally, I think because the teacher does set the mood for class, most folks end up in trendy exercise gear plus cool hip scarves. When I started, my instructor wore a leotard & 'harem pants' so that's what we ended up wearing too. being rather young, I did wear some crazy stuff to class every once in a while, but I outgrew it as it became obvious that it was not conducive to everything we were doing in class.
I can't imagine trying to teach in full costume- I would be so uncomfortable for hours & wear out my costumes way too fast! I do make a point of making sure students know what a professional costume & performance look like, as well as what is appropriate for haflas, etc. & try to steer them clear of the cheap cr*p that some of them think is just the hottest deal... I also offer costuming classes for the diy folks for the same reason- I don't want scary things like I used to wear on my students! -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 11:13 AMI teach in dance pants or shorts and a sleeveless, usually body skimming shirt, sometimes with a short practice skirt or a hip scarf over it. Some of my hip scarves are fancy, but I prefer the ones that aren't. I keep my hair up and off my neck, and I do not bother with make-up for class unless we are doing a class on make-up.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 7:41 AMI can't even imagine trying to do the stretches and other warm ups in a bedleh - yeesh! The bras especially are wildly uncomfortable. I think students and teachers need to be able to move and not be restricted by their clothing, and the clothing should allow the line of their body to be seen. I usually don't wear even a coin belt or shimmy belt during warm up because part of my warm up involves sitting down, and it's just not comfortable to sit on a bunch of coins or beads. When teaching skirt work I'll wear a skirt, but I end up hitching it up above my knees often to show the leg position and what the knees are doing.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 7:48 AMI have heard of that but never seen it or done it. I thought it was something they used to do in the old days, but I don't know -
But I HAVE seen videos & photos of a class here & there (for newspapers or whatever) where the instructor WAS wearing a costume - I just thought it was for the photo opp. and not what she usually did.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Sat, October 24, 2009 - 6:52 AMI teach in yoga or melodia style pants. When I do wear my melodia style pants - i often tie them around my ankle so that my foot work is seen. I wear a tank - fitted and coin or hip sash of some sort.
I usually do not dress up too much -- teach in rec centers and gyms so really just come in with very little makeup unless there is a reason to wear more like showing the students something about makeup or going somewhere after.
We do some stretching and exercises on the floor so while I tell them to wear what they want --- I do suggest something they are comfortable getting down on the floor in.
I cannot imagine using my full costumes to teach...they are much too expensive to get on the floor. The wear and tear on them is enough with gigs and restaurant shows....whew....that would just wear them out much quicker teaching multiple classes each week. I could see doing that if you were doing a demo class (like an advertising class for a place) but to be honest - even then I would just come a little more made up with a fancier hip scarf, makeup, and accessories. The costume would not only hide the movement like some have mentioned but could also be very intimidating for new dancers too....could be a little over the top for some students to experience the first time. I like the girls to feel comfortable and laid back in class....

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Tue, October 27, 2009 - 11:36 AMCholi, Melodias & a short overskirt. I've had people, including students, refer to my practice wear as a "costume" before, but it sounds like that's not what's happening here. Interesting!
I do think each style has costume elements that are good to practice with - wearing a choli or midriff-baring top, fringe or coins or beads or whatever on your hips, etc. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, October 28, 2009 - 7:19 PMfor me my beloved, tried and true Suhaila scrunchie-butt pants (flattering, durable, comfy!) and a tank or crop-dance top.
I get that everyone loves their melodias...but I adore the scrunchie pants!
Full costume? No way. No one would be able to see HOW I'm moving.
Also, my costume pieces were expensive, I save them for shows.

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 3:14 PMI agree with most people here, I wear yoga/Melo pants and a singlet top or crop top, as it is practical, ppl can see movements & it's comfortable (especially for a tropical Brisbane summer evening). I actually send an email to new students regarding this matter, as some ppl see others who have jumped in boots and all and spent $300 on the gear and feel obliged to as well.
I don't tend to reveal my midriff except to hike it up for the occassional demo until a few weeks into a beginner's course, as I find people who are very self conscious abut revealing their midriffs find this very confronting).
i do wear a belt or scarf and some funky earrings or bangles because it is everyone's play time too from conservative work time, and for students 95% of their dance time is going to be in class. As a teacher there is a fine balance between practicality, subconsciously "looking the part" of a bellydance teacher to your students, & not losing credibilty because people think your " just dressing up & showing off". I am very aware of this as apparently look a lot younger than I am so until students realise my age and depth of experience I find some get quite defensive in their attitude until I have "proven myself".
Usually the last week of term is dress up, and the different class levels show off what they have been studying to each other. This is a great outlet for those who like to spend hours and thousands on bling! -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 10:15 PMYup - no full costume for me. But I do wear jewelry and make up. Funky pants and sparkly scarves with my hip scarf and a fitted tank top. Some students wear similar, some wear sweats and some wear their work clothes. -

Re: What do you wear to teach?
Fri, November 13, 2009 - 3:30 PMI've recently decided to start wearing a pretty belt or other accessory with my class teaching regular workout gear. I have so many pretty things that they get used only rarely. But I'd never teach in a full costume, no way, just a belt over yoga pants is good.
I do love the look of Melodia pants but it makes it so hard to see the feet! I don't wear them to class anymore because I always have to tie them up like a pirate. I decided I prefer Magidah's pants for class (www.magidahwear.com) because the leg is narrower but still flared attractively, and also THEY DON'T PILL. (thank goodness!) And my hubby, a die-hard melodia-pant-lover, saw me from the back and gives them the thumbs up too! (grin). Very flattering to the shape.
