Hi everybody,
I'm about to start teaching at a new studio, and something occurred to me recently. I taught my last classes at a gym, and had about a 50/50 divide of women in their late teens and 20's with some dance experience, or at least pretty adept coordination. The other half were older, middle aged women, who were mostly out of shape and had a much harder time catching on. I created a second intermediate class for the girls who were more advanced to stay challenged in. Even so, in my beginner class, it was sometimes hard to balance between helping the older women who were struggling, and challenging those that learned faster, but were still beginning dancers.
I've been reading a lot about health concerns for women as they reach menopause lately, such as arthritis and osteoperosis, etc. What I'm wondering is, would it be appropriate to cater a class just for older women? I would want this class to move at a slower pace, and address some of the movement limitations, that most younger dancers are not faced with. Is there a respectful way to go about this, without creating a segregation mentality? I don't want to exclude anyone, but I'd like my students to get the most out of my classes, and I like for everyone to have the most positive, healing experience of belly dance that they possibly can. Thanks for your feedback, loves.

Re: Idea for a class
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 1:04 PMIt's not a bad idea at all; there are older women who'd really like to dance, but just struggle with it and need a slower, gentler pace.
Maybe call it something like, "Gentle Bellydance" "Relaxed Bellydance"? "Flowing Bellydance"? With a verbal description of, "Think you're too old, too heavy, too uncoordinated, or in too bad shape to learn how to bellydance? Think again! This class will focus the flowing, slower movements of the art, taking everything at a more relaxed pace. You'll still sweat, but you'll also learn muscle control and gain stamina over the course of the class." -

Re: Idea for a class
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 2:05 PMIt is a great idea to have a class for different age groups. I taught a senior class, but a "Middy" class would be a great idea.... maybe not necessary for those with dance experience, but probably necessary for those who have none! My sis is just starting and is very frustrated. I'll be working with her when we go for Christmas! -

Re: Idea for a class
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 2:29 PMI like "Boomers Belly Dance" That's catchy! I was thinking something along the lines of "Low-impact Belly Dance." Something like that. Thanks so much for the feed back and ideas ladies. beso. -

Re: Idea for a class
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 4:52 PMLOL - Boomers Belly dance had me picturing a bunch of kangaroos wearing hip scarves :-P (but that's prob cos it's nearly Christmas and Six White Boomers is my favourite Chrissy song).
Anyhoo... the class sounds like a good idea. Hope it goes well :-) -

Re: Idea for a class
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 10:35 AMHa ha! Zahira, you know that's an Aussie thing only...here in the U.S., if you say "Boomers" of course everyone thinks "Baby Boomers." The women of that age group would know, for sure.
I like this idea of appealing to a certain age group. I have done "Belly Dance for Total Beginners" but this has a different feel. Nice idea!

Re: Idea for a class
Thu, December 11, 2008 - 3:44 PMYeah, good luck with your kid's classes, Sashame. There has been some questions at my studio about whether I'd be interested in teaching the little ones. I'm a little hesitant. I just don't want to feel like I'm baby sitting, you know? I admire your patience! Good luck.
I'm thinking of call my class "Low-Impact Belly Dance" I'm still working on the description. But I'm thinking something along the lines of, " A class for late in life beginning dancers, or dancers with mobility issues. This class will work in slow, gentle fundamentals of belly dance to help increase strength and flexibility. Especially helpful in improving posture and other structural issues. This is a great class for inexperienced aspiring dancers, and a great addition to any fitness/ weight loss routine." That's all I got so far. What do you think?
I also like the idea of a belly dance for seniors class....hmmmm... -

Thu, December 11, 2008 - 3:47 PMps. Is Australian Christmas Music less annoying than American Christmas music? Call me a grinch if you must, but I do my best to avoid all stores that play that crap. -

Re: Idea for a class
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 1:24 PMDIY is usually "Do It Yourself" but I didn't see the context here. -

Re: Idea for a class
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 1:44 PMYup. Do it yourself. It's the best.
So I taught my first class in Wickenburg last night, and from what I can tell I am already teaching Boomers Belly dance. There was only one girl that looked under 30. But it was a good turn out and I feel blessed to have students. Maybe I'll shoot for a teens class or something. -

Re: Idea for a class
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 3:06 AMFun ... I think it is great to have some specialty classes. Good to think of a name that fits...also describing the focus to be more on the flexibility and movement with a gentle pace.
I taught a senior level one at an assisted living home for a while. I noted that all were welcome including wheelchair bound -- I stated that a portion of the class would be seated. It was an amazing turnout....because no one felt threatened. All knew that meant that the person coming understood they were coming for some exercise and some fun.
I loved it...bummed when they could not afford to have me any longer.
