I posted a thread about forming and managing a student troupe on the Belly Dance Troupe Talk tribe but it appears that tribe has fallen silent over the last few months. So, if anyone is interested in this conversation please join me here:

I look forward to hearing what you have to say :-)

Re: X-Post: Forming and managing a student troupe
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 12:21 PMThe biggest lesson was learning that I needed firm guidelines for my classroom because the majority of the troupe members were really disrespectful in my classes (once a troupe was formed). And when I spoke to them about it, they quit the classes.
They would constantly talk during classes, do other things they'd learned from another teacher and try to tell other students they weren't doing a move right. I told them class was not a collaboration like the troupe and they got miffed.
Never again. I can't imagine acting like that in any classroom setting. -

Sat, October 31, 2009 - 5:30 AMYou're not alone! "--it happens" lol That's kind of similar to the experience(s) that pushed me into exploring chakra energy a few years ago, and what I read really made sense. A bodyworker turned me on to it, telling me to "...look up kundalini syndrome" so I did. I knew there had to be SOME explanation ;-) My series of short articles called "Transformative Bellydance" goes into what I learned, starting here:

Re: X-Post: Forming and managing a student troupe
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 12:55 PMI think you have to decide what it is you want in a troupe then go for it... People will drop out or sign up as they see fit. And you just kind of have to let that be... You decide what type of troupe you want and those whom want to be a part of it will be there. I definitely agree with what was written about not every performer being able to make it to every show.... So keep the choreographies flexible w/ the number of people who can attend..... Personally I have my troupe be a extension of the class, so the ladies have to come to class to be a member of the troupe. Istudent troupe is very leniant and flexible. I have some Really good dancers in the troupe and some whom just enjoy taking class and performing very occasionally.. I have some who practice very regularly and those whom only practice at class.... I personally figure it's a student troupe.... I choreograph so I will continue to find the movements exciting and challenging.... I figure it's a student troupe.... so we perform occasionally and always for free.... If we were charging for performances I would probably have auditions or if I wanted a professional troupe I would have auditions and be more strict and more rehearsals.... However I enjoy just having a student troupe.... much less stress and work for me....
So that's what I think... I've said it before about teaching but the best thing is to be yourself you are never going to please Everyone so if you are yourself then those whom will be Happiest Dancing with you will come to you -

Yes, that 's what I'm taking time to do now... figure out what I want in a student troupe. If I clearly define that, the right people will come in. I've noticed Indigo's observations too - about being yourself. My class is very different from other teachers in town and those that love my class are not as happy in others. Those that want the other teachers' approach aren't happy in mine - that's the way it should be. I guess the key is accurately projecting the goals and expectations of the group so students know wether or not it's for them.
I'm a cabaret instructor, but there is a tribal/fusion troupe run by a dancer whose leadership style I really respect and admire. She has been gracious enough to share her insights on this in person too, and I'm very thankful to her too :-)
I'm hoping the Troupe Talk tribe will revive itself at some point - looks like there were some good threads there once upon a time...

I'm sure the Belly Dance Troupe talk tribe will revive! There were some good posts on there. I think the moderator has just been extremely busy.
Thanks
