My sister is having a difficult time in her beginning bellydance class. She is 43. Most of the time she is like a bull in a china shop, but she can be settled down.... after all, she can crochet, embroider, and paint. Anyway, to help her with her interior hip circles, I had to get a little graphic..... I told her to imagine that she had a sharpie marker up her butt and a piece of paper on a stool she was about to sit on, and draw a circle on the paper. My significant other almost spit Coke all over my Gram's kitchen. My sister just laughed, and did a rather good hip circle! So, is this wrong?????

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 4:58 PMI say whatever it takes is OK!!!
The visual is funny, but I've heard several funny visual representations of moves before.
One was was for an upper body undulation: Imagine you have 2 crayons sticking out of the sides of your bra and you're trying to draw circles on a set of walls on each side of you (think a really narrow hallway).
Or, my fave, the pelvic tuck: Imagine you are a male with male "equipment" and what you're trying to do is to make it swing upwards. How's THAT for a visual? hehehehe -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 6:43 PMCute! I'll have to remember that one, Sasha! (I guess if you have a male in your class, he won't have a problem imagining that one!) ;-) -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 9:57 PMI agree- whatever it takes to get it into your head.
some of our visualizations are definitely not for the general public, but I have only had one dancer seem at all embarrassed at a suggestion- & that was a pretty mild one honestly- the "I've got hips (one arm up, the other out & accenting forward hip lifts) but you can't have them (same arm forward, hip push back)" we kept things pretty toned down for her that semester, so I guess it just depends on your audience, but mostly we just get a couple giggles & they seem to help. Even when there are guys in class.

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 6:51 PMI know a local teacher who has used a nearly identical visualization for years. Except its a pencil in the lady bits drawing a circle on the floor. :) -

Thu, January 8, 2009 - 6:23 AMI'm totally 12 years old. The term "lady bits" is cracking me up. -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 11:40 AMI am 12 years old. I used the term "lady bits" in hopes I might crack someone up. :)
PS It's even more fun to say. Affect a snooty accent, and raise your pinky when you say it, too. It helps. -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 6, 2009 - 11:16 PMI frequenlty use the chalk on the nipples for the chest circles (got it from my teacher). Love your visual. Sometimes it is the visuals that make the the aha! moment. -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Thu, January 8, 2009 - 2:57 PMhehehehehe, she said "lady bits".....rofl
-
Re: Is this wrong?????
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 10:05 AMHow does putting chalk on their nipples help them understand chest circles?
Your class must be reaaaally sexay! Everyone all covered in chalk dust running around rubbing it on each other's nips.
But I bet they get chapped after a few days of this. Do you also pass out some kind of balm?
Oh hell, I crossed way over on that one...LOL! -
-
Re: Is this wrong?????
Fri, January 9, 2009 - 2:05 PMwe also do high beams, low beams & fog lights to illustrate chest lifts, chest neutral, and chest drops.
bag balm would probably help those chalky nips. It works well on udders... -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Thu, January 15, 2009 - 11:34 AMChalk on the nipples, huh? hehe...
For chest circles, I used to bring in clothespins and make my students clip them the front of their shirts in the middle and concentrate on moving the pin in circles.

Re: Is this wrong?????
Fri, January 16, 2009 - 7:17 AMOne of my students brought up the "pencil in the lady bits" thing last night. I guess there is a video on youtube in which a teacher describes it thus, floating around somewhere. She seemed a little traumatized about it. ;) I just started laughing and recalling this topic.

Re: Is this wrong?????
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 1:18 PMLOL! I have told my students all kinds of things to help them visualize the move they are trying to do. Some of my favorits are...
If you were to pee standing and you wanted to make the stream go round and round, drawing a circle in the snow. (interior hip circles)
Window washing or car waxing (wax on, wax off ) with the girls (aka boobs) always gets a giggle. (frontal vertical chest circles)
If you were a guy and were trying to make the weiner say "Hi". (only for very open adult class) (pelvic tilts)
What is really funny is when we start playing round robin and the students use these terms (circle in the snow, window washing, say hi) to call out the next movement because they remember it better than the actual name of the movement. I always call out the correct term, but it makes us all laugh and we still all know what to do.
So yea, whatever works and gets them to laugh and loosen up, cause we all know that if you are to stiff it makes it harder to try and do some of these moves. I always tell my students that there is a method to my madness.

Re: Is this wrong?????
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 9:27 PMI agree, whatever it takes, but I had a glass of wine and shot some thru my nose when I got to the "sharpie" part...I was not prepared. <wink> -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 2:44 PMDidn't someone do a skit about different visualizations for bellydance? For some reason I feel like Bonnie or Laura were affiliated with this, but maybe not. The only one I remember was that swaying the arms behind you at hip level was the "Oops I farted!" move. -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 2:36 PMHEHEHE... i agree anything that works!!!
maybe this one is not exactly what u guys are talking about, but my teacher use to call (just for the class and in funny ways) some steps as famous characters, like when she wants us to walk quick short steps she says the "tizoc" for a famous character of a mexican movie , or Thalia, when we do really quick hip locks... is funny and we remember choreas easily! it also create a nice atmosphere at class! is really like mexican humour due to the resembled characters but i think i can be applied anywhere! -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 5:40 AMWhen I teach snake arms, I say "You have a handsome man (or gorgeous woman, depending on your preference) on your right, and another on your left, you start stroking from the chest down on the right, then the left, so he/she doesn't get jealous". The lightbulb ALWAYS goes on for the students when I explain it this way, and their movements change from mechanical to very graceful! -

Re: Is this wrong?????
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 7:33 AMI am sooooo using that! -
-
Re: Is this wrong?????
Sun, February 15, 2009 - 8:01 AMI have been using that one for thirty plus years and no one has ever taken offense to it. :) For the upper body side to side undulation with reach and pull snake arms I tell them to imagine a really hot man just out of reach on each side and the students concept is to be ...right -I want him...left no I want him. It works and usually gets smiles.
dandy
