Yesterday in class.... My class and I were working on a move on the balls of our feet..... This is in my advanced class and I do warm peeps up and part of warm ups usually include either yoga balancing or a little ballet ..... I like to dance on the balls of my feet and want my students to be comfortable....
Anyhoo One of my students mentioned the nerves in her feet hurt when she is on the balls..... And I am wondering if anyone may have any advice at all....
She is very overweight and does have some health issues tho not too bad but just wanted to give that in....
All I could think was to recommend to her simply practicing becoming used to being on the balls of her feet and really work to engage her core / posture...... However she did mention the nerves in her feet hurt.... Any ideas out there?

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 9:55 PMSome people get bone spurs on the balls of their feet. I am worried I am developing some because I have been dancing for EVAH and am just now starting to get pain in the ball of my right foot regularly. Where it hurts to walk even. :( Refer her to a doctor. Anytime a student is in pain, it is dangerous to try and diagnose. Advise her to seek a trusted physician is the best thing to do.

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 6:34 AMThere are so many things that can cause foot pain, it would be impossible to guess. The advice to refer her to a doctor is the best course as you don't want her to aggravate a pre-existing problem and either blame you or quit dancing.
Perhaps in the class you could remind people that not everyone has the same body or ability and that if they need to modify a movement for safety that it is ok. I teach a beginner class of all seniors and modify is a way of life for us.
Good luck to you and the student.

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 6:50 AMI'm going to agree with the others who have posted - tell her to see a doctor immediately! I've danced most of the last year with "heel pain" that I thought was plantar fascia - turns out I've got severe tendon inflamation and am now off my feet, in a cast, night splint and undergoing physical therapy trying to avoid surgery. (This totally sucks, BTW)
Please do encourage her to see a doctor and until she does not to attemp any move that hurts. I always tell my students that rule number one is "you're not allowed to hurt yourself in my class". ;) Too bad I didn't follow my own advice!
Just FYI, I am also "overweight" and the Dr. assurred me my weight had nothing to do with my injury. Loosing weight will help speed my healing, but it didn't "cause" the problem. <no offense meant or taken> :)

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 5:28 PMThere are all sorts of wicked foot ailments out there. I have (among others) Morton's Neuroma, which is a swollen nerve between two metatarsals. It can be horribly painful.
She needs to get it checked out soon because she could be damaging it by staying on it. -

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 12:54 PMI've got that as well and can attest to the horribly painful part--I second everybody's recommendation to send your student to the doctor's. The worst thing you can do with many foot ailments is try to push through the pain.

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 6:56 PMI had Morton's Neuroma for 2 years, of agonizing pain, that only got worse and worse. It was misdiagnosed as Plantar Fasciitis, for which I got 3 cortisone shots in the heel (big ouch). When I finally got the correct diagnosis it was from the fourth doctor I went to... an orthopedic surgeon. Just 3 weeks later I was in day surgery having it removed. A week later the cast came off and a week after that my foot felt great. No more pain.
So, getting a correct diagnosis is crucial.

Re: Nerves in feet hurting
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 9:21 AMI second everyone here in that she should see a doctor. My mom had Morton's neuroma in both her feet; probably years of wearing high heels with those tight pointy-toe boxes aggravated it. She did have to have surgery.
I do these exercises to strengthen my own feet:
