Re: to find a drum
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 6:03 AMI used to like Mid East Mfg., but their prices seem to've gone up. However, they do have a nice drum on sale at just over $70 - see if this link works for you www.mid-east.com/itemdesc.asp -

Re: to find a drum
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 7:41 AMThanks! Are the 8" drums big enough to play well? What size do you recommend for beginners? -

Re: to find a drum
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 8:03 AM8" seems little...10" seems better
I know there are drummers out there.. what say you?

Re: to find a drum
Sat, November 29, 2008 - 8:53 AMI wouldn't fool with an 8" drum, especially just beginning - the one in the link is 10 3/4" x 16 3/4" that's a good size. The Alex. ones sound great, esp. for beginners :-) -

Re: to find a drum
Fri, December 5, 2008 - 11:31 AMSome good suggestions so far. If you want great personal service I'd highly recommend Artdrum.com. Greg is fantastic, and his prices are as good as you'll find. The key is to find what you want on the Mid-East website, such as that drum in the link, then email Greg with the part number. He charges 75% of the Mid-East price, and ships for free. It's hard to be sure you're getting great quality unless you can play it first, but Mid-East's return policy is very good, so even if you get a lemon, they'll replace it. If it were me, and your budget is under $150, I'd get the Alexandria with the Skyndeep head on it. Cost you $112.50 from Greg, and with that head, it will sound great. Or for about $75 you can get the blemished one and buy the Skyndeep head for it, if you think you can put it on okay.
While the Remo Ergo Doumbeks are good sounding and very durable, they are a little light in your lap and will set you back about $200, maybe a little more if you want one that doesn't have that funky faux finish. If you're going to spend that kind of money, you may as well get a nice mother of pearl Gawharet. As for the size, stick with something that has 8 5/8 head and is at least 16 1/2 tall. Unless you have an extremely short torso, anything smaller is going to be awkward, imo. Good luck!

Re: to find a drum
Wed, December 3, 2008 - 7:25 PMI wish I could remember the company I bought mine from. I got it at tribal revolution in chicago last year. Those vendors sucked up my money lol :) if I can remember or find it somewhere though, i'll post.
