Ok-I would like to hear from those bellydancers who are older (say older than 50?). Do you think as you get older you have to try harder to look glamorous in costume to compete with the younger dancers? Do you have to try harder to stay in shape--such as exercise, diet, etc.? Do you feel "passed over" due to your age or shape when it comes to being hired by someone? These issues are important issues and I'd love to hear from all of you on this.

Re: Trying harder
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 6:08 PMWell, sad to say I qualify to answer your question.
In my opinion dancers of any age should do their utmost to look glamorous in costume and stay in shape. Being out of shape at 20 is not any more attractive than at 60. As we "mature" (and my friends will hear the tone of voice I use when I say that word), it takes more effort to maintain the same body weight, stamina, and feelings of self-confidence but it is worth the effort. And, despite all the effort we put into it, our bodies change (thanks a lot gravity) in many ways that we cannot impact without surgery or some drastic measures. Naturally, there are some people who are genetically blessed and will look good no matter their age and then there are those like me who always have to work really hard to convey the allure of a dancer. Also, with passing time some of us lose the ability to do some moves that we used to perform with no problem. It is not easy then to compete with younger dancers and we have to face the fact that most people who are looking for a performer are more interested in looks than in dance ability (again, this is my opinion formed by my experiences). In my case I prefer to work in venues where skill is valued more highly than superficial appearance.
Regardless of what other people might say or think, I will continue to dance as long as I am able to physically and will look for (or make it if I have to) costuming that is flattering to my body. If no one wants to hire me then I will dance in front of the mirror at home or at some of the workshop haflas that are very welcoming to all dancers. -

Re: Trying harder
Mon, July 13, 2009 - 7:23 PMCarol-that was well said. Thank you for taking the time to answer. As I'm approaching 50 I have had some concerns about this and I wanted to get other dancers' ideas.
Shimmies!

Re: Trying harder
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 10:09 AMI think even younger dancers don't always realize how our body types change as we pass through different stages of life. Something that looked great on me at 25 doesn't look so hot at 32, but I can pull of some styles now that I couldn't then- even the shape of my face has changed, so I would remind ALL dancers to review their 'look' periodically. I agree with the comments on working to stay fit at any age too- I am quite proud of the fact that I am more fit, stronger & more flexible than I was when I was in my 20's, partly because it matters more to me now. Venues change, desires may change, but I love having older dancers too look up too- & most of the ones I know are super glam. I have a whole list of dancers who inspire me to work hard because I want to dance/look like THAT when I'm 60/70/80.
hope you don't mind relatively inexperienced me chiming in! -

Re: Trying harder
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 7:31 PMLara-I'm glad you chimed in! Your comments were good ones and I appreciate your input. I, like you, value a more fit, stronger and more flexible body and once graduate school is completed (next week!) I will be back on a more set workout schedule at the gym. It makes a difference in how I feel about myself...knowing that my body is strong and fit gives me confident. It also helps me to dance better!
Thanks again,

Re: Trying harder
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 10:45 AMHere I am about to turn 55 and become a Grand Mother too and for the first time in my life am fjust fine with my age and how I look. Do I look like I did at 30, 30 or 40? No, but that's not really important because that isn't where I am at anymore. Dancing ( especially Tribal, with the group emphasis) has taught me that it's wonderful to feel strong, fit, flexible and fluid. It's wonderful to put on ( and make) those costumes and it makes you feel glamorous but the ability to dance is what is so affirming.
I say we all celebrate our friendships, our great abilities to do what others can't or won't and keep moving as long as we possibly can.
That being said, the only difference in an Artist and a non Artist in my eye is that an Artist gives themselves permission to express themselves however they feel like doing so and they believe that their expressions are "good enough" Sometimes we second guess how we look, act, speak, we need to think more like the Artists that we are and believe it's all good enough.
I love leather, I work with leather, make some rather outlandish items ( www.saadja.etsy.com) and wear some rather outlandish items in some people's minds. ( Red Flame Phonix Rising pants) At my age I never show my belly and am concious of not baring too much cleavage or showing any excess skin or my rear view without cover.. Whatever other items I place on my older but fit body are as tasteful as I feel they are.
This is the time in our lives it's ok to feel great about ourselves as someone once said, this is the best you are likely to be, enjoy it!
Thanks for listening! -

Re: Trying harder
Wed, July 15, 2009 - 10:56 AMOops just reread the question, maybe we have an unusual dance area here in middle Iowa, there is little problem with competition. The whole BD Community is supportive of one another and we try not to interfere with but help out one another. That is one of the things that I find so attractive! We have many styles and there's room for everyone, it's just a matter of finding your comfort zone and the group where you are happiest.
And of course it is harder to stay in shape than before, fortunatly I have a labor intensive job that allows me to keep up and moving at something I enjoy.(www.northernprairiechevre,com) Life is so short, I too wish I had wasted much less time worrying about how slim I was and more time learning all these wonderful things about Dancing!
Take Care,
C
